A couple pictures I found that explain the different approaches taken by science and religion: one of them uses flowcharts!

Can I just point out that technically religion does not ignore contrary evidence. Throughout history when faced with contrary evidence religion threw a lot of effort at finding alternative explanations, rather than just ignoring the evidence. These days they do it more than ever, with books published detailing ‘interesting’ theories relating to the world around us.
I think the religion flowchart is actually much more complicated than the science one, as they have different ways ‘to deal with’ actual facts.
Of course, this does happen (for example, Galileo was definitely not ignored), but I think that the “truly faithful” followers can only really be described as ignoring evidence. Otherwise I’m not sure how someone can believe that the Earth is only 6,000 years old, despite mountains of evidence (literally) to the contrary. I don’t think there’s any other way to get around this evidence than to retort “well, I don’t have to look at the evidence since it’s wrong and you don’t know what you’re talking about because the Bible says I’m right - so there”.

Ah, but the Bible is evidence of equal weight. After all, it’s not a book of morals. It’s a history and geography textbook! Written by the Lord, no less!
